Our Club

Newcomers Club’s goal is to welcome new residents to Sun City Shadow Hills and to provide opportunities for Club Members to explore SCSH and the Greater Coachella Valley, and to establish nurturing friendships so they will feel at home here in their new community.
Join us and jump-start your Sun City Shadow Hills journey to greater enjoyment of your new community. Welcome home!
SCSH Newcomers Club Board
Welcoming. Connected. Engaged.
Meet the 2025–26 Newcomers Club Board, a dedicated group of volunteers who bring energy, ideas, and just the right amount of humor to everything they do. From planning events to keeping things organized behind the scenes, this team is here to make sure every new member feels welcome, informed, and part of the community from day one. They’re not just running the club, they’re the friendly neighbors making it all happen.
Andrew Steele
President

Andrew retired as a Physical Education teacher and brings his unique talents to our highly athletic 55+ activities like Bocce ball Bash and Putting Parties. He was able to wrangle wildly active elementary students in New York schools, so he is well-suited for keeping geezers in line.
While in high school in Hawaii, he met his wife, Bonnie. They followed some friends to SCSH and they love being here year-round with some travel breaks in summer.
Those of us who have seen Andrew emcee our Door Prize Giveaways have been entertained. Be ready for a fun-filled year with Andrew at the helm!
Rich Rawson
Vice President

Rich and his wife Kim have been Sun City Shadow Hills residents since fall 2023, shortly after Rich retired from the legal world. They are "rainbirds", splitting their time between Shadow Hills and the Seattle area, though rumor has it Shadow Hills may soon become their full-time home.
Rich co-chaired the Programming Committee this past year, helping plan many fun events which provided great opportunities for Club Members to grow their friendships. Past events included a dinner and concert at the Gardens on El Paseo, tailgating at the El Dorado Polo Grounds (so Palm Springs!), and discounted group tickets to professional sporting events at Acrisure Arena and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Thanks to Rich’s organizational skills and attention to detail, everything came off without a hitch – we are so grateful!
Once nicknamed Rocket Rawson, Rich can often be found chasing golf balls on the South and North course, cruising the bike lanes and back roads of the greater Coachella Valley, and hiking canyon trails in the foothills of the surrounding mountains. Have ideas for future Newcomers events? He’d love to hear them - let’s make it another great season as we welcome new friends and neighbors into the Shadows Hills community!
Michelle Lackner
Director of Public Relations and Communications

A snowbird from Minnesota, Michelle believes the fastest way to feel at home is to “serve somewhere, anywhere!” As last year’s President, she helped expand existing programs and launch new ones, with plenty of support from her fellow Newcomers. Now serving as Director of Public Relations and Communications, she continues to stay deeply involved, writing articles for The View magazine, creating event flyers, and contributing to the Website Committee.
Michelle and her husband moved to SCSH in October 2023, and while she still plans to kayak back in Minnesota each summer, she admits that leaving their Sun City Shadow Hills home has become harder than expected. “We’ve made so many cherished friendships here.”
Off the clock, she’s a fan of card games, especially euchre. Want to learn? Let her know and you’ll be shuffling in no time.
Diane Chapman
Treasurer

Diane is woman of many talents, raised five children, and is a former nurse. She knows a budget and has no problem saying, “We can’t afford it,” or “Who’s going to lead a fundraiser for that?” She’s a perfect person for Newcomers Club treasurer!
Her high level of energy, creativity, and organizational skills have benefited Newcomers Club already. She’s the host of our Bigly Hooch Happy Hours as well as serving on the Website Development Committee.
Since July 2024, Diane has been a full time resident of SCSH. Originally from Ohio and North Carolina, she made her way to the Coachella Valley which, she says, “is a Disney World for retirees!”
Newcomers Club has helped her make new friends she considers family. Be sure to introduce yourself to Diane, and you will find a friend in her!
Natasha Frank
Director of Hospitality

Natasha is still working as a caterer, and that profession has made her the perfect host. Every month, she converts conventional ‘meeting rooms’ into colorful parties where we get to gather and welcome Newcomers to SCSH. A full-time resident here, Natasha grew up in New Zealand, and ended up in America and SCSH by accident. If you want the full story, you’ll need some time for Natasha to tell you about it!
Natasha is always looking for Club Members who’d like to pitch in on the Hospitality Team - or if you have any ideas for party themes, contact her
Sue Drangstveit
Secretary, Director of New Members and Membership

Sue used to schedule over 200 nurses, working in their vacations, so organization skills and technological know-how are her bailiwicks. We are fortunate that she’s able to update our roster regularly as we’re always welcoming new residents. She also has training in conflict resolution. We’re hoping we’ll never need to call on her for that!
Sue is often the first person many New Members meet. She definitely has a welcoming spirit and when you meet her, since she’s originally from Wisconsin, you’ll hear a lot of “fer sure”s, “you betcha”s, and a whole lotta “Oh, ya?”s. She also makes a mean smoked pork – consider yourself among the lucky if you ever get to taste it!
Sue and her husband have been full time residents since August 2023. She loves jigsaw puzzles, her two rescue dogs, and life here in SCSH!
Oxana Biasi
Webmaster

Oxana brings a rare blend of creativity and technical skill to the Newcomers Club, leading the design and development of our new website. Born in Moscow and raised on the wave of perestroika, she moved to the U.S. in 1991 and has built a career as a professional artist, graphic designer, and e-commerce entrepreneur.
After relocating from San Diego to Sun City Shadow Hills in 2024, Oxana (thanks in part to her husband Francesco’s enthusiastic volunteering) took on the role of Website Director. With their poodle Maximillian often nearby, she’s focused on creating a modern, intuitive digital space that helps members connect with ease.
